The audience experiences the performance in small groups, entering the room every fifteen minutes and stepping into complete darkness. The artist, on roller skates, circles around them at the edges of the space, gradually pressing the viewers towards the centre of the room, guided by the circular logic of the vaulted architecture. The work takes place in the ballroom of Palazzo Magnani, a sixteenth-century space painted by Ludovico, Annibale and Agostino Carracci.
Through skating, the artist explores a new kind of dance: the movement of pleated matter. The folded anatomy of the brain – its gyri, sulci and convolutions – becomes a choreographic score, shaping her trajectories. Metaphorically, she “rolls out” the audience’s thoughts, dancing through a whirling, hypnotic circular motion. The vortex of this concentric dance builds a subtle tension, leading the public to lift their gaze and their thoughts towards the Carracci fresco cycle on the ceiling.
